Run it by a beta reader or two, and then you'll know. :-)

I plan on it. I think Mychael Black has set me on the trail of one or more of these mythical beasties. :D

Bumping this thread. Do you think the 3,000-6,000 word count per chapter holds if you're putting in a scene break? I'm working on a section and I have a location change and I'm trying to decide to cut it as a chapter or as a scene break. The preceeding scene is just under 4,000 words and I really have no idea how long the next one will be. I don't think it wll be long enough to be a chapter by itself, but the scene following it will add enough to be chapter length. The middle scene is more connected by themese to the scene after it and... Well...I just answered my own question. Chapter break when the themes change and scene break when the themes carry. >.< Agreed?

To me that's a ball park. For me, except if I'm being geeky about something (like the thread of the story requires that there be only five breaks because there are only FIVE stages of Navajo being...), if it's worth a story break it's worth a chapter break. The 3-6k mark is a ball park. I've had 1000 word chapters. I had a 9k chapter (8k of which was sex o.O ). Most chapters should fall in the general range, but there are always exceptions.

My chapters vary a fair deal. I was looking at my current WIP which has from 1500 to 5400 Phew that's a relief.
