Well, I'll be the brave soul who says that I've read some of their stuff and have liked most of it, it's really about which author it is more than who published it, IMHO.

persephoneate- 09-30-2007

True. I have bought and read some good and some mediocre stuff from EC. They're primarily M/F but opening up to M/M as I understand. Liquid Silver seems cool and author-friendly.

veinglory- 09-30-2007

My not buying EC is because I like M/M without "gender-like" role and dominant female MF--not their niche.

I'll admit that Elloras cave has my interest because of their look, the website and the graphics look so clean and shiny and professional. I have purchased at least 3 of the print books/4 ebooks and think that they're very nice quality as well. As for good or bad, that is based mainly on author and editor, I agree. For MM there isn't a print book distribution yet, but the genre has grown since I first checked it out and hopefully that will change. As for the rights issue, its true that the prospect of giving up rights is wild but then so is a check for $1400+....still there is always Samhain, which is more flexible with rights, I think, and they have a gorgeous site and put out nice print books as well.

persephoneate- 10-01-2007

Samhain does look very nice and professional too. They have the Gothic erotic romance thing down. :)

I wonder if you try and negotiate something like that are they most likely to say "well forget it then?" Or do lawyers just put these things in to try their luck? I've actually read a lot of Ellora's Cave.

I think their fall has been predicted for some time, but their sales ar still an order of magnitude higher than all but maybe 2-3 other presses. I thought EC was the number one ebook press. Who tops them?

Who tops them? No one tops them in sales as far as epress goes. They're the top for that. Perhaps Emily is talking about other erotica presses not necessarily epresses? I'm not sure, but according to EREC they're not just top in sales, they're leagues ahead of even their closest competitor. Last I saw the numbers it was something like, oh, ten times the first month sales numbers?

I wonder how EC compares to some of the erotica print presses. I'm sure there are some indie pubs that don't have the numbers EC has. The more I think about EC the more I'm want to get with them. Yes, I don't like the rights thing, but if you've sign with number one then why would you want to pull that title? Also the secondary e-pub rights market is pretty slim anyways. Hmm....

Marguerite and I sold to EC this past November (releases in May woot), and as far as I'm concerned, I can't speak for her, but I think the benefits make the rights thing well worth it. And having worked with them now, I can say without a doubt that they are *amazing* in all aspects of the process. It's a glaring difference between their professionalism and some of the other epresses I've dealt with. As far as I'm concerned, EC is welcome to everything I have until my editor there tells me to stop sending her stuff lol. Fae Sutherland

I do not (yet...cross fingers) have a title with them so I didn't know how they were to work with.

Mari- 01-03-2008

Cup, I’m in the editing process of my second novel with EC. They are not jerks. During the process of the first book, we negotiated my contract easily. Some say not to do it. I did and had no trouble. Also the editing process was during the end of the DH’s illness and through my coping with his death. My editor and the publisher were both supportive and they worked with me on deadlines and such when things got bad. I love working with them.

cupnjava- 01-03-2008

I'm glad to hear that. Fea PM'ed me and let me know how much she enjoyed working with them. It's nice to know that those at the top are still nice to work with.

persephoneate- 01-04-2008

I just got a rejection letter from them. (I submitted at the end of july for a december reply) "while we found the writing good and story line very well done, we feel that this story is not right for us..." (sigh)

(sigh) Aww, that's too bad Persephoneate. Don't give up though! Marguerite and I had our initial sub to them rejected as well, it wasn't until we subbed a second time that we got accepted. And it sounds like they liked your writing, so I'd say give it another shot with something different. Good luck! Fae
