"It's not the f/m thing" Whoa. You mean we have someone here writing under a male name who's actually a *guy*? (Blink, blink, blink.) "Like you, I loath pdf since the white background is" I don't know which version of Adobe Acrobat you have, but in the more recent versions, you can change the background color to what you want. In my version, it's Edit > Preferences > Accessibility > Replace Document Colors > Custom Color > Page Background. And then pick whatever color you want. I assume you know you can do the same in most browsers with the background of Web pages?

Whoa...I'm not sure if we should be friends. You're too pretty and you'll give me a complex. *hangs head* I sent the friend's request anyways. My poor, poor self-esteem. Ohhhmygod...you just made me cry! :!: :!: :!: YES, we should be friends, and you must send me a msg all about you, and I will send you something about me - if my page didn't already answer all those questions. I will go over there right now and add you, and I am honored that you asked, thank you :) Then, I gotta hit the hay. I'll be back tho :) (((Hugzzzzzz))))) ( I am SO glad I found this forum. I was so afraid to join!) :) Aww... don't be afraid of us. We may bite from time to time, but we've had all our shots and we (edit) only do it in a consentual manner.

Whoa. You mean we have someone here writing under a male name who's actually a *guy*? (Blink, blink, blink.) I always assumed he was a particulalt kinky fluffy puppy. But then I am very literal about avatars. That's why it bothers me when people change them too often....

But then I am very literal about avatars. That's why it bothers me when people change them too often.... Right as usual, super-star, Emily. And that sounds so much nicer than the more commonly heard: "Dirty-minded old son-of-a-bitch." Dusk, thanks for the update on the Adobe Reader. I didn't know about that change but WILL check it out. As for settings, I've found a black background with a dark-yellow font the easiest to work with, and I use the High Contrast #1 color scheme. Bayou Bill 8)

(Tries to figure out how to address kinky puppies. Decides they probably like to be addressed the same as all the other kinky folk here.) Well, in that case you'll see that Adobe offers a High Contrast color scheme - don't know whether it's the one you usually use.

Fortunately, I have no worries about your looks giving me a complex. It's not the f/m thing so much as I'm too dumb to manage anything more than a simplex. *grins* By the way, I'm also very hard-of-seeing. Lost an eye in Vietnam, the other one's pretty beat up (five corneal transplants) and very light sensitive. Like you, I loath pdf since the white background is, for me, almost painful and makes reading it on-screen very difficult. Bayou Bill 8) My thoughts exactly. I like being able to make the background gray or beige when my eyes get tired. Writing in Word does save my eyes, but like what was said earlier, there can be display issues on different screens because of the text not being tagged. That is the beauty of pdf: fonts and formatting is embedded so it will look good on anyone's computer. It does look good anywhere, right? I think there is a way to embed the text on Word. I'm ashamed to say that I don't know the program as well as I should considering I use it all the time.

"Writing in Word does save my eyes, but like what was said earlier, there can be display issues on different screens because of the text not being tagged." I think that, in that particular passage, KM Frontain was actually talking about PDF files and tags. PDF files *don't* appear the same in mobile devices, apparently, unless they're properly tagged. Likewise, if they're not properly tagged, they can't be changed to reflow for large print readers. "That is the beauty of pdf: fonts and formatting is embedded so it will look good on anyone's computer. " I'm afraid I hate PDF partly for this reason. Force me to read Times New Roman, and my eyes scream. Likewise, even with reflow (which most PDF files don't permit), the formatting can be exactly not what would be ideal when one is reading in 28-point type. That's why I prefer e-book formats where I can choose the font and formatting, such as HTML, Mobipocket, or RTF. From a designer's point of view, PDF is wonderful, for all the reasons I mention above. :) If someone is really, really determined that their work be viewed only in a particular font and a particular format (and most designers I know are that anal), then PDF is the only format that comes close to achieving that goal. So it's a tradeoff: flexibility versus adhering to the designer's vision. Frankly, if I want to adhere to the designer's vision, I read a printed book. If I'm reading something on the computer, I want flexibility, or one is wasting half the advantage of an e-book.

Although Kat is on the board I'll hazard the answer for Phaze. The parent company, Mundania, has a physical location. The editors, proofreaders, promotional people are, however, spread across the globe and work mostly from home. She can slap me silly if I'm wrong. That's pretty much accurate. Mundania has an actual office in Ohio, but I work from my home in VA.
