Okay not most, only most that use negatives as defining characteristics :) I think people often mistake their taste or niche for a genre barrier? i.e. if I like it it is romance/literary/, if I don't it's erotica/porn.... etc

Dusk- 08-28-2007

Oh, lord, yes. I get tired of all the conversations in the slash world about how "If it's good, it can't be porn, and if it's porn, it can't be good." I actually had one slasher say that to me with a straight face.

You know, I'm stuck in the erotic category mainly because of erotic scenes involving men. But when it comes down to it, I'm writing romances between men, multiple partner romances, but still romances.

And I strive towards literary porn. :) (F*ck the rules or people's preconceptions)

Just re-stating the obvious: Genres and sub-genres are simply a marketing tool, not a literary distinction. Another self-evident point: Most fiction is multi-genre, that is, it contains elements found in more than one genre. It would be nice, IMHO, if guidelines existed for erotica sub-genres similar to those RWA has created for romance. Even if the definitions are subject to debate (hard to believe, but possible  ) it should still help both writers and publishers. Bayou Bill 8)

You're right. Most fiction is multi-genre. If I classified Loved Him in order of what I think stands out in the story, it would list fantasy, romance, original slash, erotica. I don't know what the RWA does for genre distinctions. I rarely visit their site because I think they change their minds about the legitimate standing of on line publishers more than a gang of chickens change directions when chasing a panicked toad. ;-)

I rarely visit their site because I think they change their minds about the legitimate standing of on line publishers more than a gang of chickens change directions when chasing a panicked toad. ;-) Well, since you didn't ask, I decided to check it out. With fortitude best describe as "trepid" I braved the purple waters of RWA Land and came back with the following list. It may just be my faulty memory, but there seems to have been some changes. Bayou Bill 8) Romance Literature Sub-genres All romances have a central love story and an emotionally satisfying ending. Beyond that, however, romance novels can be set in any time or place, entertain any number of plot elements, or convey moods from light and humorous to dark and suspenseful. The genre of romance can be classified into various sub-genres depending on their setting and plot elements. Those sub-genres include: Contemporary Series Romance Series romance novels that focus primarily on the romantic relationship and typically set after 1945. Contemporary Single Title Romance Romance novels which focus primarily on the romantic relationship, released as individual titles, not as part of a series and set after 1945. Historical Romance Romance novels set in any time period prior to 1945, and taking place in any location. Inspirational Romance Romance novels in which religious or spiritual beliefs (in the context of any religion or spiritual belief system) are a major part of the romantic relationship. Novels with Strong Romantic Elements A work of fiction in which a romance plays a significant part in the story, but other themes or elements take the plot beyond the traditional romance boundaries. Paranormal Romance Romance novels in which the future, a fantasy world or paranormal happenings are an integral part of the plot. Regency Romance Romance novels in which the majority of the story is set against the Regency period of the British Empire. Romantic Suspense Romance novels in which suspense, mystery, or thriller elements constitute an integral part of the plot. Young Adult Romance Novels with a strong romantic theme geared toward young adult readers.

You missed: Pervert Smutfick Probably an ebook, with sex and three-dicked werecrocodile from Mars. Or something. Seriously... they added the category. ;)

You missed: Pervert Smutfick Probably an ebook, with sex and three-dicked werecrocodile from Mars. Or something. Seriously... the added the category. ;) Em, have you been hitting the Ripple, again? Besides, who cares about three-dicked werecrocodiles when there are Zombie Penguins? Bayou Bill 8)

Would I lie to you? really! fie! (penguins have limited erotic potential for those who like sexual appendages)

Would I lie to you? really! fie! (penguins have limited erotic potential for those who like sexual appendages) In that case, they're more to be pitied than censured. (note: I was looking, w/o success, for the famed animated penguin AV but did come across one I can really relate to.) Bayou Bill 8)

ROTFL. Oh, I'm so glad that wee gif ain't bigger. I'm not sure, but I think that's outlawed by the "cruel and unusual punishment" clause in the Constitution. Bayou Bill 8)
