It's not the title I'd object to.
I stumbled across this blog post: http://greaterakron.blogspot.com/2007/05/akrons-dirty-book-industry.html while looking for things that might indicate EC style. Quote: In the meantime, I found Ellora's Cave, an Akron publisher of "Romantica" or "Erotic romance." Or bodice-rippers with a Penthouse Forum level of frankness. And quote: Final note. Fans of Romantica will no doubt object to the title of the post. Fans of the old Spy Magazine may recognize the homage. No, dear, I have no problem with the title of the blog post; however, equating EC's work on any level to that of Penthouse is down right insulting and I don't even write for EC (...yet...hopefully.)

Oh, I don't know, while a lot of the letters are silly, now and then I've seen one that is quite well written.

Penthouse is a flagship magazine for its genre. :)

Cup, it apperars you are one of the few folks to notice that blog. It was posted in May and, best I could tell, therer have been no comments. FWIW (little to nothing) I agree with Emily about Penthouse. Bayou Bill 8)

I’m not so thrilled with my work (EC or Phaze) being compared with Penthouse Forum letters either. I have read them in the past, but don’t feel a first person, present tense scene with no character development or story is in the same category with the full length, complete novels that I work on for months. Can they be well written? I’m sure there are many that are. But for the most part it is a very different animal from an erotic romance novel in general…EC’s or any other erotic romance publisher. Not better or worse, just different. If you are searching for the “EC style”, I would suggest you read a couple of the Caveman Anthologies. They are a big deal for the EC authors to get accepted into and will give you a range of EC type stories. I think what you’ll eventually find is that the “EC style” is as varied as their editors and their customers.

Just FWIW, the blog compared EC's "level of frankness" not its style, to that found in the Penthous Forum. a Penthouse Forum level of frankness Bayou Bill 8)

I was hoping to unearth a comment or something by another author or reader that might be a good summary of EC's body of work. Bill, even with just "level of frankness", I'd find it insulting. For example, “Vacuuming the tube” for a description of a blowjob and that's from a stoy they thought was good enough to include in one of the anthology books.

Marguerite Mingorance- 01-10-2008

Haha, Cup, don't any of your characters ever vacuum the tube?

veinglory- 01-10-2008

Frank is good. Randy is better...

Haha, Cup, don't any of your characters ever vacuum the tube? They may vaccum the carpets (take that as you will) and they may flush the tube of the internets, but they don't actually vaccum the tube unless they're scientists of some kind and they're setting up a vaccum in a tube for some kind of experiment or if they have a big sucking thing going on in space (take that as you will); but, in general, they do not "vaccum" the "fleshy man-taking hunkahunka burning love man missle" betwen their legs. Suck dick? Sure, my characters do THAT all the time and some of them enjoy it more than others, but they've never busted out the Hoover. LOL! "Lay back and enjoy this. I won't hurt you." VAAARROOOMMMM "Pay no attention to the loud noise....ah shit...whoa...hold on..." "AAAGGHHHH! Call 911 you idiot! What are you doing to me!" Mmm...now that's good reading--NOT.
