Lowachee's first book has the whole first chapter in second person. How odd. Then switched to first.

Second person is one that I've never, ever attempted, nor have I ever felt the compulsion to. I suppose it's okay if done well. However, I don't know of many publishers who like it. A friend of mine wrote an erotic story for his then-girlfriend. We used to swap stories and critique each other. This particular story was done in 2nd person present tense. Normally, I wouldn't bother trying to read something like that. But Patrick did quite a good job on it. I had to admit that I was impressed.

I spent most of that first chapter praying the rest of the book would be in another tense ;)

Tavaran- 05-17-2005

Lucky for you the prayer worked. ;) The only second pov story/book I've ever liked or rated was the one Joel Lane subbed to Forbidden Fruit. It's very short and punchy which means the pov is less obvious than in a longer piece, and it's well enough written not to matter. I've liked it enough to include it in the anthology! But usually I find it very self-conscious and a bit of a turnoff.

I believe it! I can't imagine reading an entire book like that. *shudders*

That's what I am wondering. The 1st worked 1st and 2nd book. But the 3rd focuses on another main character. And there is enough action where the main character isn't present, to warrant writing in 3rd. I was hoping it wouldn't throw the readers off stride in reading the trilogy. I'll have to see because it certainly is throwing me off stride a bit to write it. I couldn't imagine writing an entire book in 2nd. Or reading one either.

mychael_black- 05-17-2005

So, finish the book and I'll tell ya if it works. *grins*

Tavaran- 05-17-2005

Only you know whether it's working or not, hon - but I often find that if a story is fighting back, there's a reason for it. My subconscious telling me I'm taking the wrong approach.... I'd say keep at it for a while and give yourself time to adjust to the new style, but if it's still being difficult after a few weeks, have another think....

Thanks for the advice from both of ya. I did write Joshua's introduction in book 3, and I think it flowed nicely in the 3rd person. I just want to get another 1500 words written on it today.

mychael_black- 05-17-2005

Good luck on it, hun! :D

veinglory- 06-04-2005

Well I had a little go at putting highwayman in third--but it won't fly. Now the trick is just trying to remember what i was doing with that story. That's a mission for tomorrow.

mychael_black- 06-04-2005

LOL Good luck on it, hun!

Tavaran- 06-09-2005

I have that problem with many of my wips. So often they finish on page 7 with a 'where the hell was this going?' scrawled across the bottom. LOL

veinglory- 08-13-2005

I am still resisiting fiorst person but part of me says 'if Tim Butcher and Laurell K can do it why not me?' Answer 'me' is not a famous charismatic author

mychael_black- 08-14-2005

Bah, I think you're damn good. :P But I know what you mean, hun. LOL
