None. My fanfic is way too rooted to the series to do that with...unless of course I totally steal the idea and blah, blah, blah...
I wish I could. I've been asked to put it in book format. I have used the feedback from the fanfic to help figure out hot points for the reader though.

***Reviving this topic, and I hope that's okay...***
Any fanfic I wrote was so AU it scarcely resembled the original anymore. (I think a previous poster in this thread said something similar)
I could easily change the backstory and descriptions of history and characters to make it original. It's fun, because you already have an outline, and then you just, 'change it up' :)

And knock your socks off with that. I hope it works well for you.

Thank you Cup (((Hugzzz))))
You are such a cool person :) :) :)

I write too much real person slash that just makes me think 'why am I wasting all this time and plot on someone who essentially just looks like *whoever* and has their name?'. For the most part thats it. The characters based on what they look like and act like. The rest I have to make up, and sometimes I wonder why I don't use those rather good ideas on an original story.

That said, Jack Sparrow is a distinctively distinct character. If you can write a pirate who doesn't have his particular flavor, I think you'll be able to get away with it. Sure, he'll still be compared to Jack Sparrow, but the entire genre is being compared to Jack Sparrow.
Johnny Depp has created a role for the ages, Jack Sparrow is so bigger than life that older fiction is being compared to him, rather than the other way around. Truly amazing job.

Sure, he'll still be compared to Jack Sparrow, but the entire genre is being compared to Jack Sparrow.Yeah, fuck. What I am interested in, in the character, is the way he's small, slender and flamboyant, he's alpha, he's dark- I would write him as mixed race and fighting against that stigma--- he's ambivalent sexually. And yet he manages to retain command of a group of nasties. I'm not sure if I can get away with that, what do you think? :?
The funny thing is, I've already written a character who is a bit like Sparrow-- I started writing him back in '92. He's a rock'nroll musician on the verge of stardom.
And both of these characters go back to one of my all-time favorite Sci-Fi fantasy series, the "Swords and Sorcery" series by Fritz Lieber. One of his anti-hero due is called the Grey Mouser, a "small, swarthy southerner" who teams up with a red-haired northern barbarian named Faffrd.
Heehee, you could write him like Robert DeNiro in Stardust.

Hah I love the Robert DeNiro character in Stardust, very cool!
I can't find who quoted that originally. About a Sparrow-like character. I think you could totally get away with writing that. I think it would be an interesting read. I think as cool a character as Sparrow was, he didn't have a hell of a lot of substance beyond the flouncing and such.

The lack of substance is exactly what makes him so irresistible to write about. I know one writer who makes him very dangerous, cold, calculating, other that play him for comedy, some who make him an utter, unashamed romantic- any version works. I see him as Coyote Trickster, just a bit, myself-- a man who needs to keep his wits about him and an eye for the main chance all the time.

Actually you're right Stella. He does seem to make a rather seductive write for that reason! What IS he behind all that? I'd spot him as Coyote Trickster as well I think.

Plus, you can pair him with anyone, with complete plausibility. Anyone from the three films works, in different ways. Jack and Will, Jack and James Norrington. Jack and Elizabeth. Since POTC3, there's been some insanely sexy stuff with Jack and Barbossa...
And there's a lot of totally gen adventure stories-- no sex, utterly satisfying!

Man, why didn't I see this? I guess I'm just not exposed enough to the fanfic world.

If I were a psych major, I'd write my thesis on the phenomenon!
