Request
Could we have a new house rule concerning the quoting of previous posts? Could the moderators ask that members snip the quotations so that they only show the portion of the post they're replying to? I read in 28-point type, and I have to scroll down quite a lot to find the replies when they're at the end of whole-post quotations, plus spend some time figuring out where the quotation ends and the reply begins. Sometimes I have to skim through several hundred words just to find a single-word response. (Mind you, I'm about to go offline for six weeks, so it's not of immediate relevance. But I'd rather not come back to discover that everyone's doing this now.

Seems like a fair request. I'll add it when I finally get to updating the welcome area.

Thanks!

I'm about to go offline for six weeks, so it's not of immediate relevance. Oh yeah? I'll believe that when it happens ... I seem to remember similar statements being made before ... (and I'm very good. I always snip my quoted posts ... )

Dusk- 02-19-2007

Nooo! Don't say that! My will-power is listening!

Fennie- 02-19-2007

I just found your other post, Dusk, where you were saying you were doing it for Lent, and I thought in that case I'd remove mine above, but I'm too late ... sorry, I realise it's for a serious reason now.

Hey it's still carnival season. You're allowed to be silly. :) Dusk (who wouldn't be offended in any case)

CB Potts- 02-19-2007

No Dusk for six weeks? Not that I'm suzy maudlin here, but I'll miss you! I seldom comment, but you always make me THINK and I love that about you. My lenten vow is boring: I'm doing 60 minutes of phyisical exercise everyday, which doesn't sound like much, but trust me, will be a real -*test*-('") of will here. Hopefully I can establish a habit of moving my bum from time to time.

Just think of what Dusk is requesting as the ERW version of a Jewish bris. You know, snip off the insignificant stuff but leave what really counts. Bayou "The Mohel" Bill 8)

I'm not at *all* sure I want that image in front of me when I read posts. :) "I'll miss you!" Gosh, thanks! You realize giving up ERWF is the hardest part, don't you? :) "I'm doing 60 minutes of phyisical exercise everyday" Sounds like much to me. I'm still working on 45 minutes a day. Total so far this month: 3 hours. *Ahem*. Being off the Web will give me lots of time for that, right?

Being off the Web will give me lots of time for that, right? It will? I mean, it will. More time for exercise, that is. Sure thing. A lead-pipe cinch. Right as rain. You got that. We believe in you. Honest. Bayou Bill 8)

Is that what you call a challenge? :)

Bayou Bill- 02-20-2007

Is that what you call a challenge? :) Who, me? A challenge? Nah. I call it a shaggy dog. Bayou Bill 8)

I made a request about this in another thread at ERWF (where the problem popped up), but the problem is continuing, so I'm wondering whether it's possible to have a rule about this: asking people to put URLs into links (by HTML or BBS or by using the "URL" button on the reply page) rather than pasting the URLs into the thread. When they copy and paste, the text lines stretch out to accommodate the length of the URL. I'm sympathetic with folks who find that step too complex, and I realize that a post like forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=5140>this is quite readable in 12-point type. But at 28-point type (which is what I read in), I can only get two-thirds of the text on the page. I can go down to smaller type at this time of year, but come winter, I'll have to copy and paste threads like this into a word processor in order to be able to read them. (I'm not trying to pick on the person who started this particular thread. It's been happening a lot, with various posters.)

I suspect I'm quite guilty of that and I'll be keeping a better eye on it.
