Are you talking about Diane Gabaldon's Outlander, Emily?
Anyway, interesting discussion. In my m/f romance reading, I haven't come across onscreen male rape, although I've heard of a few vampire romances that seem to include sexual torture. I'm not sure how it's portrayed though and I can't remember any names either, so not too useful.

My brains doesn't keep useful detials, I'd have to dig through the boxes. the vampiore one described as far as penetration (then the heroine rescued him).

Have you tried, I guess, glossing the rape? There's one in Lord Carabas of the main character. And while it's graphic (there's no doubt of what's happening) the sex itself is not at the fore. So far no one has had a problem with it. Course it hasn't sold that scene has passed without comment. I'll throw it in Jules & Co and you can see if it differs.
Yes please. It would be very useful to have something to compare it to.

Well, it is very graphic, as is all the sex in the book. So perhaps I could tone it down a bit.
But I don't think that's entirely the problem. Deanna, when she looked at it, thought I should give him more of a reaction, make it more of a deal, and I did rework it along those lines, but perhaps not enough.
It's a long time since I wrote this, and I have to say that although it's full of adventure, perhaps it's a bit over the top.
But, brooding about this during the night, I realised that the rape is actually essential to the plot, so it has to stay.

Is there a way you can have the character refer to it, or have it happen in flashback, where it would be a bit less 'in your face'?
Just chucking ideas about, really....

Let's not forget Diana Gabaldon's \"Outlander\" the hero was raped in that one too.

rules were made to be broken or in the very sligh-*test*-('"), bent. push. if it stands up and fits, if it really belongs and makes the story better, leave it. wrong publisher's loss, right publisher's gain.

Talking about this has been very helpful, because it's made me think about why I wrote it in this rather flat and passionless way.
It was something to do with him being very sexually experienced and therefore ultimately not making a big deal of it. And it being just one of the indignities of being held captive.
But I don't think I made that clear. It was in my head though.
And it's probably too complex for the type of book it is. So I am going for a complete rewrite.
Later in the story he does actually kill Boonmee, but that's because he's abusing Lily.

Ah, yes - the famous 'well I know what my characters are doing so why should I have to explain?' syndrome. I know it well. Much too well. ;)
Good luck with the rewrite, anyway, whenever and however you do it.
