Word Association: Fire/Burn
You'd think I wouldn't be drawing a blank on this, but I am. *head.desk* I need help trying to think of terms associated with fire and/or burn that aren't mainstream. I've done the thesaurus thing, but I need words that are more obscure. (The term for firestarting is "pyrokinesis.") Yes, this is for Blood & Fire. LOL Help? LOL

Hmm. Singe? Sear? Conflagration... setting a match to something... lighting the blue touch paper... spark... erm... running out of inspiration here I'm afraid. LOL

Immolate (sp?) is one of my favorites - to be consumed by fire.

mychael_black- 05-27-2006

Conflagration is closer to the obscurity mark that I'm looking for, I think. Words along that line, definitely. Thanks for the ideas! :D

Immolate (sp?) is one of my favorites - to be consumed by fire. Oooo...immolate is good... *nods, nods* :D Thanks!

Bonfire, inferno, pyre, anything to do with suttee (for Asians).... Gosh, this is harder than it looks. :)

mychael_black- 05-27-2006

Inferno is another favorite. *nods* Thank ya! :D Oh...anyone know the Greek word for 'fire' or 'burn'? LOL

veinglory- 05-27-2006

free associationg here: brimstone=burning stone=lit sulphur in alchemy fire is seen as a force of change and action that divids and imposes form (Kinêtikê) After setting the sun goes to Tartarus where it becomes the dark, black or invisible sun--fire is associated with hades (pre-christian) “Love is the Fire of Life; it either consumes or purifies”

Sorry, Liz, don't know the Greek for fire offhand but 'greek fire' was an early form of explosive/caustic liquid that stuck to surfaces and burned....

Lamia- 05-27-2006

Spontaneous combustion...

mychael_black- 05-27-2006

Wow! Thanks, all! :D This is all very helpful. *nods, nods*

I am partial to latin: ignigena -ae m. . ignipotens -entis . obustus -a -um . caminus -i m. . ardeo ardere arsi ; of bright objects, ; of feeling (esp. of love), ; of political disorder, . Hence partic. ardens -entis, ; adv. ardenter.

Just checked on 'Ask Jeeves' and the Greek for fire was 'pur' - hence 'purify' (cleanse by fire, presumably). Medieval justice system in England included Ordeal by Fire. If the accused carried a burning brand for several paces and wasn't burned by it, he was either guilty or innocent depending on which source you read. :D *dredges memory for other snippets*

I am partial to latin: ignigena -ae m. . Hence igneous rock, I assume! What about Hawaiin words/mythology - don't they have the volcano goddess Pele?

mychael_black- 05-27-2006

Oh, excellent!!!!!! Thanks, Em and Tav! *nods* I'll take Latin over Greek any day, but Julian's Greek. LOL Thanks for the Greek word, Tav! :D
